Planning an event includes preparing your spaces – cleaning, decorating, designing – if it’s not in the cards to revamp your living room decor this year, you don’t have to give up a new look altogether. . Buy items from home that need a new life in your living room; sometimes a change of location is enough to showcase beloved treasures from the shadows. Here are six easy ways to decorate your living room before your next meeting, all for free!
Dried flower art
If you are looking for additional items to decorate shelves or fill a space on the wall, consider making your own art using items you already own! Gather a few flowers from the backyard and dry them in a heavy book. When they’re flat and dry, lay them out on neutral paper that you can frame (go around your home for an existing frame that may not be used to its full potential!). You can also dry the flowers in bouquet form by hanging them upside down from a clip and then spraying them with hairspray or clear coating. Dried bouquets can become a centerpiece of your living room that will last a long time without investing in fake flowers!

You probably have various baskets and bins in your home that serve both practical and decorative purposes. Take a morning to collect all of those containers and pick out new ones to use in your living room. Look for different sizes and textures if you go for a shabby chic look, or choose a cohesive color scheme to stay more unified. Then display those baskets and bins in your living room at different heights – try one on the fireplace, one on the floor near the sofa, and the smaller ones on shelves. You can leave them empty or fill them with items you already keep in the room.
You know color and new linens are one of the easiest ways to update a room’s decor, but usually we go for new items to get the new look. Instead of going to the store, shop around your house for cushions and blankets that you could bring into the living room. Take the blanket at the foot of your bed and place it on the back of the sofa, or swap the cushions in the guest bedroom for those in the living room. By changing the color and textures of these accessories, you will instantly update the look of your main space.
Move your frames
A simple but effective way to change the decor of your living room is to move the photo frames to other parts of your home; either keep the photos with their original frames, or swap them too! By replacing the picture frames (hanging on the wall or sitting on the bookcase), you bring new attention to the photos inside and update your decorating scheme. Also, try grouping smaller frames into new configurations during this exchange – by creating new photo thumbnails your guests will be drawn to this display as soon as they enter!
Bigger changes to the ambiance of your living room are also possible by using items you already own! Consider moving the larger seats in your living room if space allows – sometimes a new setup is all it takes to make the room appear fresh and exciting. You can also shop around your home for smaller rooms that can add seating options. Move the chair that is in the corner of your bedroom to the living room, take the entryway bench and swap it with the coffee table to add seating for your guests that doubles as a surface, etc. Especially for an upcoming gathering, updating your seating needs with pieces from your home is an easy way to decorate!
Rather than always keeping your entire bookcase on shelves, choose a few volumes to showcase and use as decor. Look for books that have an interesting cover or a consistent color palette, then display them on a fireplace or side table. You can also choose volumes that match a season or decor depending on their topic – try spring gardening books! Moving other decors to present these books will add new interest to your living room, both visually and intellectually!
Updating your living room to add new life before a gathering can be easy – and free! Try to move a few items around each day until you find the look that suits you.
