Riri Group sets new sustainable standard for zippers – Sourcing Journal
The environmental pitfalls of virgin polyester plague all parts of the denim supply chain, including trims. Brands are increasingly using recycled polyester, while others are looking for alternatives to eliminate it from denim production.
Today, eight years after Riri Group launched its first recycled polyester zipper tape, the Italian-Swiss trim company announced that it is in the process of switching to the exclusive use of the sustainable alternative. . Although other companies like YKK are offering recycled polyester options, Riri reports that the move will make them the first manufacturing company in the fashion accessories industry to introduce the use of recycled polyester as a production standard for its line. zippers.
This transition to recycled fibers is part of the company’s green approach, which considers the innovation of the future to be one of the main pillars of its corporate strategy. “This choice once again demonstrates the company’s ability to develop products that respect the environment while maintaining the functionality, reliability and visual taste demanded by the fashion world,” said Riri Group.
The recycled polyester used in tapes for zippers is made from recycled polyester fibers, a blend of 20% pre-consumer waste and 80% post-consumer waste. All recycled polyester is GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certified, underscoring Riri’s commitment to choosing suppliers that meet international industry standards.
By using recycled polyester as the production standard for the zip line, Riri claims to reduce its carbon footprint from zip production by 3 percent, the equivalent of 169 round-trip flights from Geneva to New York.
“We are proud of this step and the effect it has on sustainability and cultural change through which we approach the development and improvement of our products,” said Renato Usoni, CEO of Riri Group. “Our innovation is the result of a tireless search for materials with low environmental impact, an approach which has been the basis of our identity for many years, but which is being renewed today to take another step towards the future.
Style also remains a priority for the company. Riri’s Spring / Summer 2022 collection features three themes that represent different emotional responses to the pandemic.
In Rejoice, the bright and vibrant colors of Buenos Aires are applied to the teeth and the pull tabs of the zippers. Riri’s Rebirth line focuses on zippers and buttons developed with natural materials and processed manually. Copper jeans buttons with a special water-based paint are part of the collection, as well as bio-plastic eyelets derived from hemp.
The design, materials and colors of the Timeless collection move away from seasonal trends to become the pillars of the collection. “Each piece is cared for down to the smallest detail, created specifically to leave a lasting mark,” the company explained. The buttons, chains and zippers are either gold, silver or stainless steel. The ribbons are made with “fine” materials such as leather and satin.
