Mets Board Oyj: Fire at Mets Board Husum Pulp Mill Chip Conveyor

A conveyor belt feeding wood chips to hardwood and softwood digesters at Metsä Board’s pulp mill in Husum, Sweden caught fire on Friday, June 18 at around 12:30 p.m. CET. City firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control at around 2:30 p.m. CET and were able to transfer oversight responsibilities to local firefighters at the Husum plant at 9:30 p.m. CET.
The fire did not spread to other buildings and caused no personal injury.
The cause of the fire is being investigated. The investigation into the parts and installations damaged by the fire was opened on Saturday morning.
Currently, pulp and board production at the Husum Integrated Mill is at a standstill. According to preliminary estimates, pulp production would be shut down for four weeks. Cardboard production is expected to start in the next few days at a lower than normal capacity.
The extent of the damage caused by the fire and the effects on production are being assessed.
