Chelsea star refuses to rule out transfer as Thomas Tuchel considers summer overhaul
It will be another busy summer transfer window for Chelsea, although the majority of the Blues’ business this time around is likely to be spending focused.
New loan restrictions that will take effect ahead of the 2021/22 campaign will limit Chelsea to eight international loans involving players aged 22 or older. And that means the loan army will have to be cut.
Not as drastically as some expect, of course, but with Baba Rahman, Davide Zappacosta, Matt Miazga, Danny Drinkwater, Kenedy, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Michy Batshuayi all contracted until summer 2022, some will have to be moved this summer. .
There will also be exits at the first team level. Olivier Giroud and Willy Caballero are both in breach of contract at the end of the campaign and can leave. The future of Thiago Silva is also still undecided.
Emerson is also another potential player who will be leaving Stamford Bridge this summer. The Italy international has only played three times since Thomas Tuchel’s appointment at the end of January, and two of those outings have been in the FA Cup.
The 26-year-old hasn’t played in the Premier League for Chelsea since mid-December, although Tuchel was quick to praise the defender’s attitude in training.
“He trains with incredible effort. He’s one of the nicest guys you can imagine,” said the German coach after Emerson came off the bench to score against Atletico Madrid in the League champions.
“He’s always nice, with incredible qualities. You had to give him a reward and give him a few minutes to thank him for his attitude.
“This is the perfect example. You see what comes back, we get such a big reward, everyone is cheering and everyone happy for him because I really believe that everyone in the band feels what they do for the band.
“It’s not easy because he puts his personal situation aside and plays his role which is to give 100%, to be super professional and at the same time super nice. He never leaves anyone in a bad mood. It’s fantastic.”
Emerson is currently absent on an international mission with Italy and began his country’s World Cup qualifying victory over Northern Ireland on Thursday. He hopes to add to his 13 caps for the Azzurri tomorrow night when Italy face Lithuania.
Reports in Italy claim that Roma and Inter Milan are both interested in signing Emerson this summer, with only one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge.
But he insists now is not the time to discuss a possible departure from Stamford Bridge.
“It’s still early days to talk about the future,” he told Rai Sport. “I’m just focusing on the national team. We’ll see what happens in June.
“Chelsea can go all the way in the Champions League and the FA Cup. We can win something this season.”
