Breed Picks Fight With Chronicle Over Alleged ‘Misinformation’ In Red Tape Exposé Shared Spaces

After the Chronicle published a report noting that 90% of the city’s shared space parklets “will need to be removed or significantly altered” under the new regulations, Breed ran to rail on Medium and called the report ” disinformation “.

Monday’s Chronicle published a pretty revealing story about the new rules that were added to the city’s shared space parks program and the recent violation notifications that were sent to restaurants, which many restaurant owners say are quite onerous. and expensive. This article featured an excellent graphic detailing some of the more difficult parking restrictions and interviewed Golden Gate Restaurant Association Executive Director Laurie Thomas, among others.

Many SF restaurants are preparing to dismantle their parklets, and they may not have the money to rebuild.

This article noted that the Golden Gate Restaurant Association “estimates that up to 90% of parklets will need to be removed or significantly modified to meet the guidelines, which span over 60 pages.” He also adds that “many companies have already been warned that they will face heavy fines if they do not make these changes in the weeks that follow.”

The article quoted Breed spokesperson Jeff Cretan as saying that such an enforcement is not actually enforced.

The Shared Spaces program is not going anywhere. I have led the charge to make this program permanent and I am 100% committed to making this transition as easy as possible for businesses.

The Mayor of London Breed is not at all happy with this article, and as you see above, she calls it “misinformation”. She also tackled it with an angry rebuttal on Medium, saying that “Recent reports on this have given the impression that the program is in jeopardy or that 90% of companies will have to close their fleets, or that the guidelines of the city are impossible to follow, and I want to be very clear that this is not even close to the truth.

Breed doesn’t specifically mention the Chronicle, but it’s pretty obvious which article she’s talking about, as she takes particular umbrage with “heavy fines” and “over 60 pages” language.

There’s a lot of talk about 60 pages of regulations, but it’s worth taking a look at the guidelines.

It’s not 60 pages of fine print. These are basically the same guidelines we’ve had since last spring, with just more graphic design, diagrams, and examples. https://t.co/MNtxtGNcUV

“No one is fined or forced to change parking lots at this time, except in a small handful of extreme cases for significant issues of life safety or disabled access,” she said on Medium.

“And while it’s a lot of talk about 60 pages of regulation, it’s worth taking a look at the guidelines,” Breed continues. “It’s not 60 pages of fine print – it’s essentially the same guidelines we’ve had since last spring, just with more graphic design, diagrams, and examples to better understand how it all works.”

You could rightly argue that the Chronicle is generally a pro-Breed article, so maybe this spat is surprising. But the Chron spins a lot of stuff, some Breed up butter, others unflattering. Some Chron articles have a pro-developer bias, others have an anti-gentrification bias. Some seem pro-Chesa Boudin to recall, others seek to demystify the accounts of hysterical crime that fuel the recall.

But Breed seems to be bristling here with an element that she believes could threaten her pro-small businesses in good faith. She is quite vocal about wanting credit for this program and is hostile that there can be blame as well.
